Digital Camera Open

Digital camera stuck open. I have put recharged batteries in and it swithes straight off again. Please HELP!?

I have a Pentax camera almost 4yrs old but in very good condition. I cannot for the life of me take any photos because the camera lens is open and when I put the batteries in it comes on for 1 or 2 seconds and then switches straight off. Does anybody know the cause and also how to fix this problem.

Two possibilities:

1. This is a common problem caused by the camera being dropped or bumped hard. Have you protected it well since before the last time it worked?

2. Unfortunately, some cameras that are 4 years old have been known to wear out already. Cameras made today should have a longer life expectancy.
