Upgrading from a Canon XT kit lens?

I’d like to get a general use lens to replace my current 18-55 kit lens for my canon XT. I’m a hobbyist and by no means a professional, so what is a good expensive general use lens?

For my personal camera, I use a Canon XTi. The lens you have is probably the best general purpose lens. In addition to this lens I also have the EF 55 – 250 IS lens and the EF 10 – 22mm lens.
The combination of these three lenses more than cover all of the pictures I take for my personal use and pleasure.
Add these two lenses to your system, and you should be extremely pleased with the variety of pictures you can take, and the outstanding quality of these 3 lenses.
